Food Forest Planting Guilds

Monday 9-3-2012

A big part of my permaculture design, is the food forest. Food forests are essentially planned forests that incorporate food producing species of plants. Typically many layers are planned and incorporated into the forest. The seven layer forest includes from top to bottom, the canopy layer, the small tree or understory layer, the shrub layer, the vine layer, the herbaceous layer, the groundcover layer, and the root layer. A properly designed mature food forest can thrive without outside inputs or maintenance.

Above is a picture of one of my chestnuts. This would be only a single layer. I need to at least establish a shrub layer, a ground cover layer, an herbaceous layer, a root layer, and an understory layer around my young canopy trees.

Choosing specific trees and plant communities to go along with my tree canopy layer can be very research intensive. I have chosen plants for edible produce, nitrogen fixation, beneficial insect attractors, mulch producers, wood producers, insect repellant, and wildlife habitat. Many of these plants offer multiple benefits. After much research, below is a list of the various tree species and the plant communities that will accompany the trees to complete my food forest. The numbers in parenthesis after the supporting plant species denotes the amount to be planted. The specifics of the ground covers are listed at the bottom.
