How to Fertilize Fruit and Nut Trees

Wednesday 3-21-2012

Make sure to get your fruit tree fertilization done before the bud break. I like to use compost because it’s abundant, cheap, natural, and it feeds very slowly. On the downside, it is more labor intensive to spread than a pelletized synthetic fertilizer. Apply the compost like you would mulch, and make sure to keep it a couple of inches away from the trunk. The compost will feed your trees all year. Also, don’t forget no wood mulching for fruit and nut trees. Wood mulch tends to encourage rodents, which love to gnaw on the tree trunks. I just use the compost as my mulch.
